Digestive Disorders<\/h3>\n

The digestive system can be separated into two groups:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The alimentary canal \u2013 a hollow muscular tube that starts at the mouth and winds through the body to reach the anus (consisting of the mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine).<\/li>\n
  2. The accessory digestive organs \u2013 the teeth, salivary glands, pancreas, liver and gall bladder<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    All together these organs are mainly responsible for breaking down food into tiny particles that our bodies can absorb and make energy for us as well as to build and repair tissue in need\u2026was what we were taught in school, but there is so much more to the digestive system making it much more complicated.<\/p>\n

    Let\u2019s go to our microbiota (the tiny creatures that are living on us and inside of us), we are made up of 10 trillion human cells and about 100 trillion microbial organisms are living in us and on us.\u00a0 Contrary to what we have been taught to believe we are mostly microbial.\u00a0 We can not look at digestive health without considering our microbiota.<\/p>\n

    There is increasing research indicating that our microbes influence who we become and how we feel.\u00a0 Microbes influence how we digest food, absorb drugs, and produce hormones, they also interact with our immune systems and affect our brains.\u00a0 With the interaction between our microbes and brain, a term has come us referring to our microbiome-gut-brain axis.<\/p>\n

    As if this is not complicated enough, we cannot forget the work of Dr Michael Gershon, who wrote a book titled: \u201cThe Second Brain\u201d, in this wonderful book he goes on to explain that the gut can function completely independently from our central nervous system and spinal cord, telling us that the digestive system in the abdomen has a nervous system that is completely separated from our brain, it can regulate itself on its own.<\/p>\n

    Understanding the Significance in healing the digestive system<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The discussion around the digestive system goes something like\u2026 In the small intestines of the digestive system where you have many villi, about 10 \u2013 40 villi per square millimetre. Epithelial cells form the border between the inside of our bodies and the outside. These epithelial cells are joined together by tight junctions not allowing any large proteins through. Our epithelial brush border should be sealed not allowing any pathogens or large proteins through. As you can see from the diagram below, we have immune tissue in the form of Peyer\u2019s patches in the intestinal wall and this is where our immune systems are alerted and triggers to respond to invaders.<\/p>\n

    We know that the gut microbiome is essential in educating our immune system. When a foreign protein penetrates the gut lining the immune system is on guard deciding what it should or should not do. When we have a happy and diverse microbiota we seal off the gut wall and this then signals our immune system to relax.<\/p>\n

    An intact and diverse microbiome, regulated stress levels, healthy diet, keeping lectins (a plant protein that is essential to protect plants for spreading their genetic information, but these proteins cause damage and permeability in our intestines) out and exercise are significant ways of us remaining healthy and ageing well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
